If you’re seeking to soothe or stimulate your scalp, or simply want to enhance the radiance of your hair, incorporating essential oils into your hair care routine can provide benefits. Essential oils can be beneficial for all hair types, whether you have long or short, thick or thinning hair. Healthy hair growth can be supported by essential oils, which offer scalp benefits that may help with dandruff, dry or oily hair, reduce stress, and balance hormones.

Dandruff is a common skin disorder that affects over half of the world’s population, and while it isn’t harmful, it can be bothersome due to the many flakes of dead skin. Certain hair care products that contain harsh chemicals can also cause dandruff, resulting in a scaly, itchy, or red scalp. Essential oils, such as Tea Tree, incorporated into hair care regimens can help soothe the scalp and reduce the buildup of flakes, promoting a healthy scalp and hair.

Maintaining healthy hair can be challenging due to the many chemicals and synthetics found in food and daily-use products. Formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen, was found in keratin treatments, which are meant to enhance hair. Essential oils for hair can nourish hair, offering hydration, strength, soothing effects, and cleansing properties that promote healthy hair.

Is your hair too oily? Essential oils, such as Peppermint or Bergamot, can help reduce oil production when oil glands produce too much, resulting in healthier and more beautiful hair.

Losing hair? Causes of hair loss can include genetics, hormonal imbalances, stress, nutritional deficiencies, medication side effects, autoimmune disorders, and certain hairstyles and hair treatments. Incorporating essential oils into hair care can provide many benefits that promote a healthy scalp, healthy hair growth, and beautiful looking, stronger hair. Please see a list of my favorite essential oils below:

Bergamot: uplifting, refreshing, astringent and regulating;

Cedarwood: cleansing and astringent; enhances circulation; tightens follicles; stimulates healthy hiar growth;

Clary Sage: balancing (helps to balance sebum) – especially good for dry and oily hair; calming and regulating; supports hormonal balance;

Lavender: calming, relaxing, soothing, and regenerative; great for dry scalp and hair; soothes itchy scalp; promotes stronger hair (less breakage); stimulates hair growth;

Lemon: cleansing and astringent; great for oily hair; use with light hair color only (unless you want to naturally lighten your hair color); great for nourishing dry scalp;

Peppermint: stimulating, increases circulation and blood flow to scalp and hair; supports proper nourishment for hair growth; soothes the scalp;

Rosemary: invigorating and stimulating; supports proper nourishment for hair growth; promotes stronger hair; stimulates hair follicles;

Tea Tree: astringent and cleansing; great for scalp irritations and dandruff; great moisturizer for scalp and hair;

Roman Chamomile: very soothing; great for scalp after chemical procedure or harsh weather conditions; soothe itchy scalp; reduce dandruff;

Myrrh: great for dry scalp, dandruff, and underactive sebaceous glands; use instead of lemon oil if hair is not oily;

I personally use a shampoo and conditioner already infused with essential oils (see link below) and massage my scalp with 4 drops Cedarwood and 4 drops Rosemary every time after I’ve washed my hair. Essential oils are not ‘oily’ they will completely absorb into the scalp and support a healthy scalp and healthy hair growth. Besides massaging your scalp and hair with essential oils, you can also add essential oils to the hair care products of your choice (see chart of how many drops to add depending on the dilution ratio and size of shampoo or conditioner).
